Why It’s Worth Asking For Help

Is it worth asking for help when you could do it on your own? Here’s a short story from when I was younger to answer this question.

“I can move this.” a kid version of me thought.

At this time, the dresser in my bedroom closet was about as tall as I was.

I knew my parents probably wouldn’t want me moving this alone. But I felt determined.

“If I could do this by myself, then why wouldn’t I?” I thought.

I clenched my jaw, planted my feet, and pushed as hard as I could.

Inch by inch, I moved the dresser.

And while I could indeed move it… it was only by pushing so hard that I started seeing stars.

In a matter of less than a minute, I found myself with a headache, flopped on the floor, breathing heavily.

At first, I felt frustrated with myself for not being stronger.

I kept breathing, staring at the ceiling.

And from that place of exhaustion, my next thought was,

“That would have been a lot easier if I had asked for help.”

Later, I realized that I had tried to move the dresser by myself because I didn’t want to feel weak.

I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it on my own.

But for what?

What did I actually gain from “doing it by myself”?

A headache.

Most people seem to have this same resistance to asking for any form of help.

Like me, They want to prove they can do it on their own. They don’t want to look weak or incapable.

Asking for help doesn’t mean you can’t do it on your own.

It doesn’t mean you’re weak or incapable.

It’s just a sign that you’re asking yourself the question, “Would this be any easier if I wasn’t doing this alone?”

No matter what challenges you’re facing in your life, odds are that they could be a little easier with the right kind of support.

So what do you value more, your pride? Or ease?

Is there anything in your life that could be easier if you had an extra hand to help you out?

In conclusion

Asking for help doesn’t mean you “need” help, it just makes life a little easier.

Help means you don’t have to do it alone. And if you don’t have to do it alone, then why would you want to?
